Secrets of the heart made known: subtleties of creative processes in physical theatre

Led by Osnat Schnek Yosef and Gideon Zehavi

Physical theatre as conceived and practiced by Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba and Israeli David Ma’ayan brought about major change in the theatre of the 20th century. In it the focal point turned from ‘dramatic text’ to ‘theatrical event’ between actor and spectator. Grotowski proclaimed the total actor to be a “Holy Actor” who reveals an inner and essential truth to the spectator through an act of self-sacrifice.

Physical theatre frequently delivers highly powerful, personal and booming performances.  The creative process initially required the actor to expose and sacrifice him/her Self on its altar, many times at the expense of their emotional welfare. In recent years, a secondary change is taking place in physical theatre with the integration of drama therapy into its practices. Drama therapy supports the creative process in bringing it into consciousness and facilitating its dynamic unfolding during the training phase and the performances themselves.

We invite you to take part in a six-hour experiential workshop in which you will experience the creative power of physical theatre. Taking on a drama therapeutic perspective will draw us closer to our conscious experience as creative artists and to the potentially healing capacity of an introspective, yet universal art form.

Workshop facilitators

Osnat Schnek Yosef: A creative artist and director at the Acco Theatre Center and a seasoned drama therapist.

Gideon Zehavi: A drama therapist, supervisor and lecturer in Israel and abroad. He is a creative artist and the director of the Israeli Institute of Developmental Transformations (DvT).
